Sew With Confidence: Expert Tips to Overcome Common Sewing Challenges

Nov 26 / Holly Stirman
We know that sewing can feel intimidating, especially if you’re just starting out. But every expert began with questions, just like you. This week, fashion designer Holly Stirman is sharing her expertise to help you overcome common sewing challenges and boost your confidence.

What is the Best Beginner Sewing Machine?

Choosing the right sewing machine is the first step to sewing success. Holly has two favourite beginner-friendly machines that she recommends for different reasons:

1. Brother LS14S

  • Pros: The Brother LS14S is a compact and budget-friendly machine, perfect for beginners. It offers 14 stitch options, including a 4-step buttonhole, and is lightweight, making it ideal for those with limited space or who need portability.
  • Price: £50 - £100
  • Singer Heavy Duty 4423

  • Pros: The Singer Heavy Duty 4423 is known for its durability and ability to handle thicker fabrics like denim. It features 23 stitch options and has a straightforward design that’s easy to use. If you want a machine that’s reliable and efficient, this is a solid choice.
  • Price: £250 - £300
  • Why Does My Thread Keep Breaking?

Thread breakage is a common frustration. Here are some troubleshooting tips from Holly:

    • Check the Needle: A dull or bent needle is often the culprit. Replace it using a small screwdriver to loosen the needle clamp, then insert a new needle with the flat side facing the back. Make sure it’s fully in place and tightened securely.
    • Rethread the Machine: If the needle isn’t the issue, rethread your sewing machine carefully. Ensure that the spool of thread is positioned correctly to avoid misthreading, which can lead to breakages.

Why Does My Fabric Keep Bunching Up?

Bunched-up fabric can be frustrating, but Holly has some simple solutions:

    • Adjust Tension Settings: If your fabric is bunching, the tension might be off. Adjust the tension dial—higher numbers mean tighter tension, while lower numbers mean looser tension.
    • Use the Right Needle: Double-check that you’re using the correct needle for your fabric type. Lightweight fabrics need smaller needles, while thicker fabrics require heavier ones.

    Keep Stitching and Don’t Stress!

Remember, every stitch is a step towards improvement. Focus on progress, not perfection. Keep practising, experiment with different settings, and don’t be afraid to make mistakes. You’ve got this!
